My Story, My Mission

Erik Spahn, Occupational Therapist + Integrative Sleep Coach

Personal and professional experience brought me early to the understanding that good sleep is essential to health and well-being. I ask every patient about sleep, even if their complaint or diagnosis appears "unrelated". I've been doing that for over 25 years because sleep is relevant for everyone. An explosion of exciting new scientific understanding has proven this to be true. Clear connections now exist between poor sleep and Alzheimer's, Cancer, Obesity/Diabetes, Anxiety, Mood Disorders, Behavioral Problems, and a growing list of health challenges. Any of these conditions can in turn disrupt sleep, causing a vicious cycle of escalating poor health.  Ironically, even as appreciation and understanding of sleep grows, I've watched cultural, technological, and environmental changes quickly and efficiently ruin sleep.

We know when we're having poor quantity sleep (insomnia) because it is torturous. However, when it comes to the quality of our own sleep, we are poor judges. This helps explain why all the health conditions mentioned above are increasing despite our best efforts.. There is an epidemic of people who can't sleep, but there is also a silent epidemic of people who do sleep but do not reach all the stages of sleep needed for health and happiness. My Productive Sleep model serves both populations by integrating new science from accross different specializations, addressing environmental factors (both internal and external), and by utilizing remedies and "sleep hacks" from around the globe. I believe it is the most efficient and effective way to evaluate and improve sleep as an adjunct to medical and/or psychological treatment.
